Award effective 31 October 1944 as per London Gazette of that date and
AFRO 1/45 dated 5 January 1945.
American in the RCAF.
This officer has completed a very large number of operational
sorties. Since the invasion of France he has destroyed or damaged 73 enemy
machines. In addition he has shot down two enemy aircraft. His fine fighting
spirit, great skill and tenacity have set a fine example.
NOTE: DHist file 181.009 D.2833 (RG.24 Volume 20632)
has recommendation dated 20 August 1944 which bears comparison. As of
that date he had flown 107 sorties (162 hours 40 minutes):
Throughout many sorties the skill and fine fighting spirit
of Flying Officer Young has been an example and inspiration to the squadron.
On August 19th, 1944, this officer destroyed or damaged eighteen enemy
vehicles bringing his total score to 73 enemy vehicles destroyed or damaged
since the invasion of the continent. In addition to this he has destroyed
two enemy aircraft in the air. His keenness and aggressive spirit is worthy
of the highest praise.

Toronto Airman In RCAF Awards
Ottawa, Nov, 1, 1944 - (CP) - Award of the Distinguished
Service Order to one member of the RCAF overseas and the Distinguished
Flying Cross to six others was announced tonight by Air Force Headquarters.
The DSO went to Sqdn Ldr. R. K. Hayward of St.
John's, Newfound land, credited with destroying five enemy aircraft. He
had "proved himself a most courageous leader," Headquarters
said.
Recipients of the DFC were: S/L J.A. Hatch of 145 Douglas Drive, Toronto;
F/L H. McLachlan of Aden, Alta.; F/L F. B. Young of Vancouver; F/O C.
W. Chown of Mirror, Alta.; F/O H. L. Davenport
of Russellville, Arkansas; F/O H. J. L. McKinley, Nassau, Bahamas, West
Indies.

Frosty on July 6th 2005
We're sorry to report that frosty passed away on Sept 8,
2008 at age 87 in Grinnell, Iowa
His Obituary reads as follows :
Forrest B. Young
Frosty Young, former Chico resident, passed away
September 8, 2008
in Grinnell, Iowa where he had been living for 2 years. He was
born February 28, 1921 in Cheshire, Ohio and raised in Huntington,
West Virginia. After graduation, he obtained his private flying
license and
joined the Royal Canadian Air Force, where he trained and flew
Spitfires
as a WWII fighter pilot. During this time, he married Norene Fallows
with that marriage ending after the war. He served first in the
Aleutian Islands before supporting the D-Day Invasion into France.
In November
of 1944, he was shot down and spent the last six months of the
war in
a POW camp in Germany. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying
Cross. After the war, he began working for Security Title Company
in Stockton. He married Helen Gretchen in 1950. They later moved
to Chico in 1962, and he began working with Mid-Valley Title &
Escrow Company. During this time, he also served on the Board
of Mt. Shasta Title Company. He retired as President in 1981,
after 20 years. He continued serving on several Boards and was
a real estate developer. He was an active member of the Elks and
Masons; and was an avid golfer, enjoyed RV traveling and spending
time outdoors. After Helen passed away in 2004, his health began
to decline and he moved to Grinnell in 2006 to be closer to family.
A Memorial service will be held Wednesday, October 8 at 1 pm at
Canyon Oaks Country Club in Chico.
He is survived by his Children, Cherril (John) Longhurst of Corona
del Mar; Robert (Louise) Young of Savage, MN; Richard (Robin) Young
of Grinnell, IA; and Lori (Jeff) Young of Honokaa, HI; 6 grandchildren;
and 2 great-grandchildren.
